The Abuelo (https://cvm.msu.edu/directory/abuelo-sebio) and Sordillo (https://cvm.msu.edu/directory/sordillo-gandy) Labs are seeking a Ph.D. graduate research assistant to begin in August 2018 (fall semester). The graduate student will work on a recently federally funded project that seeks to study the impact of oxidative stress on vaccination responsiveness in neonatal dairy calves. The project entails both field and in vitro experiments, combining immunologic, molecular biology, and metabolomics analyses to assess the immune response of calves under various conditions of oxidative stress. Additionally, the successful applicant will have the opportunity to be involved in a variety of other research projects from both labs, including nutritional immunology of dairy cows and calves, and other dairy production medicine topics.

The Department of Large Animal Clinical Sciences (https://cvm.msu.edu/lcs) has a highly collaborative environment of about 40 faculty, with significant strengths in the areas of physiology, immunology, epidemiology, and bovine health management. The Department also has important collaboration links with the Department of Animal Sciences, the MSU research farms, and numerous large commercial dairy farms near to the MSU campus. More broadly, there is a substantial community of scientists conducting different comparative medicine and integrative biology research within the College of Veterinary Medicine (https://cvm.msu.edu/research/faculty-research). Also, the MSU core facilities (https://rtsf.natsci.msu.edu/) offer an exceptional infrastructure for flow cytometry, genomics, bioinformatics, mass spectrometry, and proteomics.

Michigan State University (https://msu.edu/), the pioneer land-grant school, is one of the top research universities in the world where veterinary science has been taught since its 1855 founding. Located on one of the nation’s largest and most beautiful campuses, the University is home to a diverse international community of dedicated students and scholars, athletes and artists, scientists, teachers, and leaders. East Lansing’s collegiate atmosphere is complemented by low cost of living with convenient access to large cultural centers such as Ann Arbor, Grand Rapids, Detroit, and Chicago.

To be considered for this position, applicants must have a veterinary degree (DVM or equivalent) –preferred– or a bachelor’s or higher degree in Animal Science or other relevant sciences. Also, the applicants must meet the admission requirements for the Comparative Medicine and Integrative Biology (CMIB) graduate program (https://cvm.msu.edu/future-students/graduate-programs/cmib), including English language requirements for those whose native language is not English. A competitive stipend is available and will commensurate with experience.

To apply or for more information, please contact Dr. Angel Abuelo (abuelo@msu.edu). A CV, a statement of research interests, and name and contact information of three professional references are required for applications. Selection will begin immediately, and applicants will be considered for the position until March 31, 2018.
